  • No Salts
  • No Chemicals
  • No Electricity
  • No Servicing
  • No Waste
  • Fully Potable Water
  • WRAS approved
  • Highest Scoring Effectiveness of any PWC

ScaleStop System

ScaleStop comprises a pressure vessel partially filled with a media through which the cold water supply is passed using simple inlet and outlet connections. The vessel is bottom fed so that it fluidises the media bed.

Sub microscopic particles of scale form spontaneously in the water due to the media and remain suspended as it flows from the vessel. When the water is later heated, the same particles act as highly efficient nucleation seeds for the formation of further scale, thus stopping it encrusting surfaces. As well as minimising scale encrustation, ScaleStop is also capable of removing existing encrusted deposits.

Efficiency

ScaleStop is extraordinarily efficient because it requires no electrical power, magnets or other form of energy. It consumes no chemicals or additives and it generates no waste. It is self re-generating and completely self contained.

Maintenance and Servicing

There is no requirment for maintenance or servicing under normal mains supply conditions. The life of the media will be determined by the amount of contaminants in the water supply. The media is warranted for a period of two years from the date of installation.

Statutory Compliance

ScaleStop media is WRAS approved. (0705509).

Effectiveness

The only recognised measure of the effectivness of PWC's is the German performance test DVGW-W5 12. The result of the test is a score as a percentage reduction of scaling between treated and untreated heaters. ScaleStop has achieved a near perfect score of 99.6%. The pass percentage for W-512 is 80%. None of the PWC's commonly specified in the UK have passed W-512.

*Further information on W-512 is available here.

Location

ScaleStop vessels should be installed on the cold water service. Where a break tank is installed, it is preferable to locate the ScaleStop downstream of the tank and booster set. Treatment before the tank is acceptable. The vessel must be installed vertically. The treated water is fully potable.

Sizing

ScaleStop vessels may be installed as single or as matched multiple united to meet any flow requirements. There is no minimum flow rate.

The maximum service flow is the maximum flow at which full treatment effectiveness can be maintained. Brief periods of higher flows can be accommodated with minimal impact on performance. Pressure loss at maximum flow rate < 0.1 Bar.

Temperature and Pressure

Water temperature minimum 5°C
  maximum 44°C
Water pressure minimum 1 bar
  maximum 10 bar

Water Chemistry Parameters

Ferrous Iron < 300 ppb
Manganese < 50 ppb
Copper < 1300 ppb
pH 6.5 to 8.5
Total Hardness (max) 1,300 ppm
Chlorine Less than 3 ppm in normal usage but shock treatment is acceptable
Chlorine Dioxide No limit

Template Assisted Crystallisation
(TAC)

ScaleStop media is manufactured using a special process that generates literally billions of specially shaped nucleation sites on the surface of each ceramic polymer bead. The pressure vessel is partially filled with media and is connected to the cold water supply so that the vessel is bottom fed. The inlet water fluidises the media, maximising the contact points so that they act very efficiently. The Ca and HCO3 ions come together on the nucleation sites and spontaneously crystallise into nano sized particles of scale. Further growth occurs until the larger crystal can no longer be retained on the media and it breaks away, seeding the water with sub-microscopic crystals of limescale which themselves act as nucleation seeds when the water is heated. The media is retained in the vessel. For more detailed information about TAC, click here

Hard Water -
The Chemistry

Most of the problems associated with hard water are caused by dissolved Calcium Bicarbonate Ca(HCO3)2 which crystallises when water is treated above 50° to form Calcium Carbonate CaCO3 (limescale). Limescale normally forms on nucleation sites on the surface of heaters and pipes, encrusting them with scale. This results in mechanical failure and energy wastage.

Physical Water Conditioners -
The Mechanism

Physical Water Conditioners (PWCs) treat hard water by generating particles in suspension in the body of the water. These particles act as nucleation seeds on which the limescale forms. The scale remains suspended in the water rather than encrusting the surfaces of pipes and heaters. The effectiveness of a PWC is very dependent on the volume and type of nucleation seed that it generates. ScaleStop generates very high volumes of nucleation seeds as CaCO3. This is the most effective nucleation seed for attraction limescale.
